Just when you think
This problem seems to come out of nowhere and surprise you. You may notice flushing and red bumps that you never had before.
This problem requires consistent long-term medical therapy, as well as lifestyle changes. Sunscreen is a must every day. But sunscreens containing alcohol can irritate and flare the skin.
In addition, good cosmetics have a green tint to diminish the redness followed by a regular foundation. Kitty, our aesthetician, is happy to assist you in learning what makeup to use and how to apply it.
Factors which may trigger flushing include various foods, lotions, and medications, as well as heat, alcohol, exercise, and physical exertion. Patients are advised to hold off on the use of hot tea, hot coffee, hot soups, sodium nitrites and sulfites. There is a lot of cosmetic intolerance in this disease. Medications to prevent flushing do not perform well and have side effects.
Sucking on ice chips, as impractical as it may seem, helps to resolve the flushing associated with hot foods and exercise. Cool Ziploc bags with ice chips are also helpful. The MD hydrating mask stored in the refrigerator also reduces redness and irritation.
The bumps may be treated with antibiotics. The red lines (telangiectasia) can be treated by laser, but various triggers and time will produce more telangiectasia.
