Ultraviolet light causes free radicals.

Free radicals cause skin damage. Vitamins C, E and selenium destroy free radicals.

Fat in the diet is one variable.

Animals that were exposed to UV light were studied. The higher the fat in the diet, the higher the risk of actinic keratoses, which is a pre-cancerous condition.

Vitamin C has shown protection at 500 mg.

Vitamin C needs to be taken twice a day for maximum benefits. Vitamin C is not made by the body so it must be eaten, taken in pill form or applied to the skin twice daily. Vitamin C is critical in wound healing, collagen formation, and reducing the risk of cancer.

Carotenoids have been shown to decrease

squamous cell carcinoma. Selenium is associated with a decrease in lung, prostate and colon cancer.

Increased vitamin E levels

are associated with a decrease in skin cancer tumors. Vitamin E has been shown to reduce photoaging and skin cancer.

Vitamin A (Retinol) has shown benefits in photoaging.

Retinoids have been studied extensively and show benefit in numerous precancerous, cancerous and benign conditions. Patients who are vitamin A deficient show decreased wound healing. Vitamin A has benefits for treating acne, psoriasis, and stretch marks. Besides vitamins, everyone should strive to eat at least five fruits and vegetables per day.
